Backend Engineer — Data Pipelines

About the Role

As a Backend Engineer focused on Data Pipelines, you'll design, build, and maintain the data infrastructure that feeds analytics, AI models, and business intelligence tools across Ekrocx's enterprise client portfolio. You'll work closely with our data architects and AI/ML engineers to ensure clean, reliable, and timely data flows.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement robust ELT/ETL pipelines for high-volume retail and CPG data sources.
  • Build and maintain Apache Airflow DAGs for orchestrating complex data workflows.
  • Develop connectors and integrations between ERP systems, commerce platforms, and data warehouses.
  • Ensure data quality through schema validation, monitoring, alerting, and automated testing.
  • Optimise query performance across BigQuery, Snowflake, or similar cloud data warehouses.
  • Collaborate with Data Architects to implement data governance standards and access controls.
  • Document pipelines and data contracts to support cross-team data discovery.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of backend engineering experience with a strong focus on data engineering.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL; experience writing production-grade, testable code.
  • Hands-on experience with Apache Airflow or a comparable orchestration tool (Prefect, Dagster).
  • Experience building pipelines on cloud data platforms: Snowflake, BigQuery, or Azure Synapse.
  • Understanding of data lake architectures, partitioning strategies, and file formats (Parquet, Delta Lake).
  • Familiarity with version control best practices and CI/CD for data pipelines.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with dbt for data transformation and modelling.
  • Knowledge of streaming systems such as Kafka or Apache Flink.
  • Exposure to Shopify, SAP, or Oracle ERP data models.
  • Understanding of data mesh or data product principles.
